Luke Okay Portfolio
Being the menswear designer for Billabong Luke has continually created new shapes and styles for the brand, pushing innovative and on trend garments across T-shirts, fleece wear, jackets and button up shirts. While being progressive and keeping an eye on moving the brand forward his styling and roots hark back to a vintage surf era of fun and exciting lifestyle products with the brand’s identity at its core.
One of Luke’s primary responsibilities in the menswear role is creating a diverse range of T-shirts for Billabong’s wide range of customers. Utilising Luke’s artistic background he brings T-shirts to life with his graphics & art, in combination with wash and base detailing, using different techniques and hand-feels with the T-shirts purpose in mind.
From patches to woven taping, stitch detailing to the functional trims of a garment or accessory. Luke has an eagle eye for the details and little things that go into making a product look great and perform seamlessly.
The “Dark Spark” collection designed for Winter 20 is a harder edge surf wear capsule, combining Luke’s love of metal music with a sensibility of street work wear styling. Using a limited palette of black, white, red and camel to help dive into the darker side of surf.
Thrashed out zine feeling graphics combo’ed with black metal fonts sit plastered on tees and socks like old band posters, while being layered with textured easy-wear jacketing. Luke’s Checked Out Arch trim package runs throughout apparel, pants and accessories tying the collection together.
Luke Okay, lives for art & surfing. Using his art to express his passion for our oceans & the environment. Luke’s message is simple, as surfers we can all play our small part in helping to keep the ocean a beautiful place to enjoy for future generations. Billabong is proud to feature Luke as one of our Gallery artists.
Last year Luke Okay traveled to Cape York, an area where ocean currents converge, dumping tonnes of plastics & marine debris into a concerntrated area. Luke & the Trash Tribe volunteers managed to clean 7t of trash from 7km of beach. Cataloging & tracking data of their finds along the way. Their biggest find however was how big of an impact an individual can make. Negative or positive, this web of life is affected by us all.
The artworks in this collection are directly inspired by the trip & the plastic pollution issue plaguing our oceans & one of our planet’s vital food sources.
